Say Hello to the Layla Chair!

I am so happy to finally be able to share the Layla Chair with you.

From its initial concept sketch, this simple chair was a favourite. The playful design was inspired by the ergonomics and beauty of the Hans Wegner Wishbone Chair (among others). The economy in which the chair comes together is seamlessly married with an intricate attention to detail and use of traditional joinery, adding the strength and structural integrity to the minimalist design.

This piece was an invitation for myself to deeper explore my craft. Researching and practicing the use of steam bending timber over a form, to fabricate the constant curve of timber which creates the backrest of the Layla Chair. I am continuously humbled by the innate ingenuity of timber, and by how much I am still a student of this beautiful, natural material.

After a lengthy process of trial and error, of soaking and steaming and sometimes snapping, the correct formula for creating was established and the Layla Chair was crafted into existence. The chair has a simple yet solid presence that lends itself suitable to many differing dining settings, as well as being stack-able for ease of commercial application.
