THE TOKO BENCH
The Toko Bench
“Each flitch, each board, each plank can have only one ideal use. The woodworker, applying a thousand skills, must find that ideal use and then shape the wood to realize its true potential.”
- George Nakashima
It is with great honour that I am able to work with fallen giants each day. To apply the thousand skills I have acquired over the many years in my trade. To acknowledge the sacrifice each board has made and the gift in its offering.
The seventh release in our collection of chairs which has been 2 years in the making is The Toko Bench. I used this collection to explore the many varying techniques and methods of chair construction, as well as evolving my own ideas of aesthetic beauty and ergonomics. Each offering has showcased a diverse range of styles and philosophies.
The Toko Bench is an exploration of shape and form. Its solid construction and brute exposed joinery are gently softened by its curves and organically carved body and legs. It’s dark appearance is created by oxidising the oak, this is a natural process where the tannins in the oak react to an iron oxide solution before being finished with an oil.
As with all of my work, this piece is made to order in our Mullumbimby Workshop. We are able to adjust the dimensions and style to best suit your space, and as the body and legs are organically shaped by hand no two pieces will be the same.
All the best
